Pascal Chmelar has exhibited internationally and across the country. His work, while utiliatarian, is boldly sculptural and has strongly textured surfaces from a six day wood firing. Pascal's pots are either hand built or thrown on a wheel and modified. The clay is formulated from local materials. Glaze is applied, only to the interiors of bowls, just before the pieces are placed in the kiln. The kiln, which Pascal designed and built, is a variation of the classic Japanese Anagama kiln. The colors and textures on the pots are the result of ashes falling on the surfaces, flames coming in contact with the pieces, and the microclimates in the kiln
Pascal Chmelar, a native of New York City, received his MFA in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1993. His interest in pottery began while in grade school and continued through high school. After college he apprenticed with potters and studied studio pottery in Europe.
