Opening the Envelope - Introducing the pottery of Shyatesa White Dove, Acoma.

Change is a constant of Native American pottery. Over the centuries, some changes where gradual while others  were sudden and often dramatic. Trains with tourists began the process of change early in the 20th century, then again in the 1960’s with the Interstate Highway system and the opening of the Institute of American Indian Art (IAIA). 

Shyatesa White Dove’s focus at IAIA was Museum Studies but she became intrigued by the pottery. She turned to her Grandmother to learn about the history and imagery of Acoma pottery and culture. Rather than using typical complex geometric designs, Shyatesa’s calming imagery draws heavily from nature while emphasizing space.

Other innovative artists in the show are potters Diego Romero, Cochiti; Alan E. Lasiloo, Zuni; Glen Nipshank, Bigstone Cree; and photographer Cara Romero, Chemehuevi.
