THE
ACT OF CREATING
Les has continued to learn about and experimented with
pottery as well as with paintings. The paintings are
oil or acrylic on paper, board, or canvas and the style
is still abstract expressionism.
Les
describes his pottery as a combination of the
traditional with the contemporary. Specifically the
shape of the vessel is built in the traditional way,
but my designs are definitely abstract expressionism,
asymmetrical, Les says, I sometimes treat
the surface of the pot as if it were a canvas; I especially
like using different techniques, like under painting,
or different types of slips.
I'll
always have a love and respect for pottery making,
he noted. It keeps a person humble. There's so
much involved, especially with the time it takes, and
it teaches you that you can't control everything in
pottery making. Dextra used to tell me this. The pots
have a mind of their own. And as for art and creativity
in general, he added, When you create art, it
isn't really just you creating. Our Maker has given
everybody certain talents. For potters, it is the talent
to create with clay. It is through our Maker, The Creator,
that we're allowed these blessings.
